(b) Any other whale that produces valuable whalebone, as the Atlantic, or Biscay, right whale (Bal[ae]na cisarctica), and the Pacific right whale (B. Sieboldii); a bone whale. Pygmy right whale (Zo["o]l.), a small New Zealand whale (Neobal[ae]na marginata) which is only about sixteen feet long. It produces short, but very elastic and tough, whalebone.

Hyalonema Hy`a*lo*ne"ma, n. [NL., fr. Gr. ? glass + ? a thread.] (Zo["o]l.) A genus of hexactinelline sponges, having a long stem composed of very long, slender, transparent, siliceous fibres twisted together like the strands of a color. The stem of the Japanese species (H. Sieboldii), called glass-rope, has long been in use as an ornament. See Glass-rope.
