Calycanthus floridus Allspice All"spice`, n.
The berry of the pimento (Eugenia pimenta), a tree of the
West Indies; a spice of a mildly pungent taste, and agreeably
aromatic; Jamaica pepper; pimento. It has been supposed to
combine the flavor of cinnamon, nutmegs, and cloves; and
hence the name. The name is also given to other aromatic
shrubs; as, the Carolina allspice (Calycanthus floridus);
wild allspice (Lindera benzoin), called also spicebush,
spicewood, and feverbush.
Crotalus horridus Rattlesnake Rat"tle*snake`, n. (Zo["o]l.)
Any one of several species of venomous American snakes
belonging to the genera Crotalus and Caudisona, or
Sistrurus. They have a series of horny interlocking joints
at the end of the tail which make a sharp ratting sound when
shaken. The common rattlesnake of the Northern United States
(Crotalus horridus), and the diamond rattlesnake of the
south (C. adamanteus), are the best known. See Illust. of

1. (Script.) The fire god of the Ammonites in Canaan, to whom
human sacrifices were offered; Molech. Also applied
figuratively.
2. (Zo["o]l.) A spiny Australian lizard (Moloch horridus).
The horns on the head and numerous spines on the body give
it a most formidable appearance.
