[Obs.] ``Joy or penance he feeleth none.' --Chaucer. 3. (Eccl.) A means of repairing a sin committed, and obtaining pardon for it, consisting partly in the performance of expiatory rites, partly in voluntary submission to a punishment corresponding to the transgression.
