Blackfish Black"fish, n. 1. (Zo["o]l.) A small kind of whale, of the genus Globicephalus, of several species. The most common is G. melas. Also sometimes applied to other whales of larger size. 2. (Zo["o]l.) The tautog of New England (Tautoga). 3. (Zo["o]l.) The black sea bass (Centropristis atrarius) of the Atlantic coast. It is excellent food fish; -- locally called also black Harry. 4. (Zo["o]l.) A fish of southern Europe (Centrolophus pompilus) of the Mackerel family. 5. (Zo["o]l.) The female salmon in the spawning season. Note: The name is locally applied to other fishes.

A bird of the Parrot family, of the subfamily Cacatuin[ae], having a short, strong, and much curved beak, and the head ornamented with a crest, which can be raised or depressed at will. There are several genera and many species; as the broad-crested (Plictolophus, or Cacatua, cristatus), the sulphur-crested (P. galeritus), etc. The palm or great black cockatoo of Australia is Microglossus aterrimus.

Simpai Sim"pai, n.[Malay simpei.] (Zo["o]l.) A long-tailed monkey (Semnopitchecus melalophus) native of Sumatra. It has a crest of black hair. The forehead and cheeks are fawn color, the upper parts tawny and red, the under parts white. Called also black-crested monkey, and sinp[ae].

The name is applied also to other voracious insects. --Joel. i. 4. (b) In America, the larva of any one of several moths, which destroys the foliage of fruit and forest trees, esp. the larva of Ypsolophus pometellus, which sometimes appears in vast numbers.
