clove, lit. nail of clove, fr. L. clavus nail, perh. akin to
clavis key, E. clavicle. The clove was so called from its
resemblance to a nail. So in D. kruidnagel clove, lit.
herb-nail or spice-nail. Cf. Cloy.]
