Cerastes Ce*ras"tes, n. [L., a horned serpent, fr. Gr. ? horned, fr. ? horn.] (Zo["o]l.) A genus of poisonous African serpents, with a horny scale over each eye; the horned viper.

These lizards have several hornlike spines on the head, and a broad, flat body, covered with spiny scales. They inhabit the dry, sandy plains from California to Mexico and Texas.
