fenuclum. See Fennel.] (Bot.)
An umbelliferous plant (F[oe]niculum dulce) having a
somewhat tuberous stem; sweet fennel. The blanched stems are
used in France and Italy as a culinary vegetable.

(a) A small, handsome European singing bird (Ruticilla
ph[oe]nicurus), allied to the nightingale; -- called
also redtail, brantail, fireflirt, firetail. The
black redstart is P.tithys. The name is also applied to
several other species of Ruticilla amnd allied genera,
native of India.
(b) An American fly-catching warbler (Setophaga ruticilla).
The male is black, with large patches of orange-red on
the sides, wings, and tail. The female is olive, with
yellow patches.
Tetranthera geniculata Pond spice (Bot.), an American shrub (Tetranthera
geniculata) of the Laurel family, with small oval leaves,
and axillary clusters of little yellow flowers. The whole
plant is spicy. It grows in ponds and swamps from Virginia
to Florida.
Pond tortoise, Pond turtle (Zo["o]l.), any freshwater
tortoise of the family Emydid[ae]. Numerous species are
found in North America.
