Pintail Pin"tail`, n. 1. (Zo["o]l.) A northern duck (Dafila acuta), native of both continents. The adult male has a long, tapering tail. Called also gray duck, piketail, piket-tail, spike-tail, split-tail, springtail, sea pheasant, and gray widgeon. 2. (Zo["o]l.) The sharp-tailed grouse of the great plains and Rocky Mountains (Pedioc[ae]tes phasianellus); -- called also pintailed grouse, pintailed chicken, springtail, and sharptail.

Any of the numerous species of gallinaceous birds of the family Tetraonid[ae], and subfamily Tetraonin[ae], inhabiting Europe, Asia, and North America. They have plump bodies, strong, well-feathered legs, and usually mottled plumage. The group includes the ptarmigans (Lagopus), having feathered feet. Note: Among the European species are the red grouse (Lagopus Scoticus) and the hazel grouse (Bonasa betulina). See Capercaidzie, Ptarmigan, and Heath grouse. Among the most important American species are the ruffed grouse, or New England partridge (Bonasa umbellus); the sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioc[ae]tes phasianellus) of the West; the dusky blue, or pine grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) of the Rocky Mountains; the Canada grouse, or spruce partridge (D. Bunting Bun"ting, n. [Scot. buntlin, corn-buntlin, OE. bunting, buntyle; of unknown origin.] (Zo["o]l.) A bird of the genus Emberiza, or of an allied genus, related to the finches and sparrows (family Fringillid[ae]). Note: Among European species are the common or corn bunting (Emberiza miliaria); the ortolan (E. hortulana); the cirl (E. cirlus); and the black-headed (Granitivora melanocephala). American species are the bay-winged or grass (Po["o]c[ae]tes or Po[oe]cetes gramineus); the black-throated (Spiza Americana); the towhee bunting or chewink (Pipilo); the snow bunting (Plectrophanax nivalis); the rice bunting or bobolink, and others.
