Note: The common or sea lamprey of America and Europe (Petromyzon marinus), which in spring ascends rivers to spawn, is considered excellent food by many, and is sold as a market fish in some localities. The smaller river lampreys mostly belong to the genus Ammoc[oe]les, or Lampetra, as A. fluviatilis, of Europe, and A. [ae]pypterus of America. All lampreys attach themselves to other fishes, as parasites, by means of the suckerlike mouth.

It is easily caught and often used for food and for bait. In America the killifishes or minnows are often called gudgeons. 2. What may be got without skill or merit. Fish not, with this melancholy bait, For this fool gudgeon, this opinion. --Shak. 3. A person easily duped or cheated. --Swift. 4. (Mach.) The pin of iron fastened in the end of a wooden shaft or axle, on which it turns; formerly, any journal, or pivot, or bearing, as the pintle and eye of a hinge, but esp. the end journal of a horizontal. 6. Any one of numerous species of spiny-finned fishes belonging to the Percid[ae], Serranid[ae], and related families, and resembling, more or less, the true perches. Black perch. (a) The black bass. (b) The flasher. (c) The sea bass. Blue perch, the cunner. Gray perch, the fresh-water drum. Red perch, the rosefish. Red-bellied perch, the long-eared pondfish. Perch pest, a small crustacean, parasitic in the mouth of the perch. Silver perch, the yellowtail. Stone, or Striped, perch, the pope. White perch, the Roccus, or Morone, Americanus, a small silvery serranoid market fish of the Atlantic coast.
