A name given to several dark-colored timbers. The East Indian
black wood is from the tree Dalbergia latifolia. --Balfour.
Dalbergia Sissoo Sissoo Sis*soo", n. [Hind. s[=i]s?.] (Bot.)
A leguminous tree (Dalbergia Sissoo) of the northern parts
of India; also, the dark brown compact and durable timber
obtained from it. It is used in shipbuilding and for gun
carriages, railway ties, etc.
Pterocarpus dalbergioides Redwood Red"wood` (-w[oo^]d`), n. (Bot.)
(a) A gigantic coniferous tree (Sequoia sempervirens) of
California, and its light and durable reddish timber. See
Sequoia.
(b) An East Indian dyewood, obtained from Pterocarpus
santalinus, C[ae]salpinia Sappan, and several other
trees.
Note: The redwood of Andaman is Pterocarpus dalbergioides;
that of some parts of tropical America, several species
of Erythoxylum; that of Brazil, the species of
Humirium.
