Albatross Al"ba*tross, n. [Corrupt. fr. Pg. alcatraz cormorant, albatross, or Sp. alcatraz a pelican: cf. Pg. alcatruz, Sp. arcaduz, a bucket, fr. Ar. al-q[=a]dus the bucket, fr. Gr. ka`dos, a water vessel. So an Arabic term for pelican is water-carrier, as a bird carrying water in its pouch.] (Zo["o]l.) A web-footed bird, of the genus Diomedea, of which there are several species. They are the largest of sea birds, capable of long-continued flight, and are often seen at great distances from the land. They are found chiefly in the southern hemisphere.

Sooty albatross (Zo["o]l.), an albatross (Ph[oe]betria fuliginosa) found chiefly in the Pacific Ocean; -- called also nellie. Sooty tern (Zo["o]l.), a tern (Sterna fuliginosa) found chiefly in tropical seas.

Wandering cell (Physiol.), an animal cell which possesses the power of spontaneous movement, as one of the white corpuscles of the blood. Wandering Jew (Bot.), any one of several creeping species of Tradescantia, which have alternate, pointed leaves, and a soft, herbaceous stem which roots freely at the joints. They are commonly cultivated in hanging baskets, window boxes, etc. Wandering kidney (Med.), a morbid condition in which one kidney, or, rarely, both kidneys, can be moved in certain directions; -- called also floating kidney, movable kidney. Wandering liver (Med.), a morbid condition of the liver, similar to wandering kidney. Wandering mouse (Zo["o]l.), the whitefooted, or deer, mouse. See Illust. of Mouse. Wandering spider (Zo["o]l.), any one of a tribe of spiders that wander about in search of their prey.
