Gnat Gnat, n. [AS. gn[ae]t.] 1. (Zo["o]l.) A blood-sucking dipterous fly, of the genus Culex, undergoing a metamorphosis in water. The females have a proboscis armed with needlelike organs for penetrating the skin of animals. These are wanting in the males. In America they are generally called mosquitoes. See Mosquito. 2. Any fly resembling a Culex in form or habits; esp., in America, a small biting fly of the genus Simulium and allies, as the buffalo gnat, the black fly, etc. Gnat catcher (Zo["o]l.), one of several species of small American singing birds, of the genus Polioptila, allied to the kinglets. Gnat flower, the bee flower. Gnat hawk (Zo["o]l.), the European goatsucker; -- called also gnat owl. Gnat snapper (Zo["o]l.), a bird that catches gnats. Gnat strainer, a person ostentatiously punctilious about trifles. Cf. --Matt. xxiii. 24.

Paper house, an audience composed of people who have come in on free passes. [Cant] Paper money, notes or bills, usually issued by government or by a banking corporation, promising payment of money, and circulated as the representative of coin. Paper mulberry. (Bot.) See under Mulberry. Paper muslin, glazed muslin, used for linings, etc. Paper nautilus. (Zo["o]l.) See Argonauta. Paper reed (Bot.), the papyrus. Paper sailor. (Zo["o]l.) See Argonauta. Paper stainer, one who colors or stamps wall paper. --De Colange. Paper wasp (Zo["o]l.), any wasp which makes a nest of paperlike material, as the yellow jacket. Paper weight, any object used as a weight to prevent loose papers from being displaced by wind, or otherwise. Parchment paper. See Papyrine. Tissue paper, thin, gauzelike paper, such as is used to protect engravings in books. Wall paper. Same as Paper hangings, above. Waste paper, paper thrown aside as worthless or useless, except for uses of little account. Wove paper, a writing paper with a uniform surface, not ribbed or watermarked.
