In America the name is given to several birds, as the Quiscalus versicolor, or crow blackbird; the Agel[ae]us ph[oe]niceus, or red-winged blackbird; the cowbird; the rusty grackle, etc. See Redwing.

(b) A North American passerine bird (Agelarius ph[oe]niceus) of the family Icterid[ae]. The male is black, with a conspicuous patch of bright red, bordered with orange, on each wing. Called also redwinged blackbird, red-winged troupial, marsh blackbird, and swamp blackbird.
