Any marine bivalve shell of the genus Mactra, and allied
genera. Many species are known. Some of them are used as
food, as Mactra stultorum, of Europe. See Surf clam,
under Surf.

Any one of the large bivalve mollusks found on the open
seacoast, especially those of the family Mactrid[ae], as
the common American species. (Mactra, or Spisula,
solidissima); -- called also beach clam, and surf clam.
